I'm going to kick off Vegan MoFo with a comic about our excursion last week to Millennium.

Sucka MoFo: Vegan Month of Food 2009!

Happy autumn y'all! I don't know what the weather is like where you are but there's an undeniable crispness in the air during my morning commute, and my bike wheels is crunching through more and more crispity brown leaves. YES. I love autumn so much. There's squash, and the last of the really amazing tomatoes and corn, and Halloween, and appley things, and wind, and VEGAN MONTH OF FOOD!

That's right, Vegan MoFo is back for its third year. Kell and I participated last year as well. Isa says:

The idea is to write as much as you can for the month of October about vegan food. The blog entries can be about anything food related - your love of tongs, your top secret tofu pressing techniques, the first time your mom cooked vegan for you, vegan options in Timbuktu - you get the idea. There is no strict guideline for how much you have to write, but we shoot for about 20 times a month, or every weekday.

There's big news around the Berkeley Three's household: we're getting CATS! And they DANCE DANCE DANCE and they DANCE DANCE DANCE! Not really. Well sort of. They're very cute despite the lack of dancing. My parents have been taking care of a stray that they named Hildie for the past few months, and all of a sudden about a month ago they heard mewing from our woodpile...KITTENS! There were three kittens with Hildie, all completely different colors. Mom is going to keep Hildie and one of the kittens, and we're taking the other two, as soon as they're old enough. ALL of them are obviously going to be spayed/neutered but we have to wait until they're old enough. We cannot wait. I promise many pictures.

And the most important thing: Kelly and I are participating in Farm Sanctuary's 2009 Walk for Farm Animals in San Francisco. Basically we get to raise money to help animals and look super sporty doing it. It's a win-win. Seriously though, it's a really awesome thing to do and since there are walks taking place all over the country, you should do it too!

Happy birthday Kelly! + Isa testers

IT'S KELLY'S BIRTHDAY TODAY!! WOO! My baby sister is growing up, which is exciting/terrifying because I swear to god she was like 6 years old yesterday. How she got into bars with me I DON'T KNOW MAYBE IT'S TIME TRAVEL but anyway, she deserves a fantastic fucking day and many many hugs and showers of presents. We're going to Millennium tomorrow (for her first time!) so there will be much food scarfing. Anyway HAPPY BIRTHDAY KELL and plz to not throw up on anything in the house if you get drunk tonight k thx.

Weight lossy: Testing for Isa's new book

While 2009 has been kind of a shitstorm for me and my family, one of the coolest things going on in my life (and keeping me sane) has been all the recipe testing I've been doing. I'm lucky enough to be testing for Isa Chandra Moskowitz, the woman who with a single book taught me how to cook and embrace veganism.

The new book is slightly different from her previous books, in that it focuses on low-fat, high-fiber, veggie-full fare! It's not a diet book, though; it's got filling servings, gorgeous colors, and ridiculously flavorful sauces; it's for people who want to eat well, not for dropping a few pounds and then going back to stuffing yourself with salt and vinegar chips (not that I, um, do that). And, it's pretty pantry-friendly, too! Win!

Everything has tasted so great so far. I feel GOOD after eating this food, and it has shocked everyone, vegans and non-vegans alike, that this it's healthy! No one has walked away from my table feeling deprived.

Happy Labor Day: Vegan Latina testers

Hope everyone is having a lovely Labor Day! If you're in the states, that is. Monday 3-day-weekends usually throw me off, but I managed to get work done AND take a nap without feeling guilty about it, so I'm doing quite well.
